Seven Keys to Baldpate is a classic mystery that opened on Broadway in 1913. Written by George M. Cohan and based on the 1908 novel by Earl Derr Biggers. Novelist William Magee makes a $5000 bet with a wealthy friend that he can write a mystery novel within 24 hours. To accomplish this task, he escapes to the solitude of a summer mountain resort named Baldpate Inn, in the dead of winter. He locks himself in with his typewriter believing he has the sole key. He gets more than he bargained for as he is interrupted during the night by a succession of people none of whom have any trouble getting into the remote inn—there appear to be seven keys to Baldpate. He happens upon a plot to steal $200,000 from the hotel safe and becomes entangled in murder, mystery and deceit with a group of questionable characters including a corrupt politician, a hermit, a feisty girl reporter, a gang of criminals and the police.
